The story behind the photo

Keep the photo.
Keep the story.

Every family has a box of photos that only one person can explain. Picmori asks three short questions about a picture and writes the answers on the back, before the story is lost.

Who

Where and when

Why it mattered

Pick a photo. Answer three things.

Turn 1 of 3

Who

Nothing leaves this page. A photo you add and the words you write stay in your browser and are gone when you close the tab. The sample photos are drawings.

How it works

Three turns, like the mark.

The Picmori mark has three parts. So does a photo that can explain itself.

TURN 1

Who

Name everyone, and say how they belong to each other.

TURN 2

Where and when

The place, the year, the season, as near as you can get.

TURN 3

Why it mattered

What was happening that day, and what happened next.

Read the method

A photo keeps the faces. Not the names.

Names go first

A face without a name is the first thing a family loses. Every Picmori story starts with who, left to right.

The camera does not know why

A phone saves the date and the place. It cannot save why you were there or what happened an hour later.

Two minutes a photo

Three short answers, not a memoir. Small enough to do for one photo tonight and another next week.

Questions that get answers

Ask "tell me about your life" and people freeze. Hand them a photo and ask who is in it, and they talk.

Private by design

The story maker runs in your browser. Your photo is not uploaded, and there is no account to create.

Works with paper

Copy the three answers onto a card, into an album or into the caption field of any photo app you already use.

Common questions

What is Picmori?

Picmori is a free photo story maker and a library of prompts. It asks three short questions about a photo (who, where and when, why it mattered) so the story is written down next to the picture.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. If you add your own photo to the story maker it is shown from your device inside the page. It is not sent to a server, and it is gone when you close the tab.

Is there a Picmori app?

Not yet. An app that keeps photos and their stories together is in development and is not available. Everything on this site is free to use now.

One photo. Three answers. Two minutes.

Start with the print you would save from a fire. No account, nothing uploaded.
